Compassion
I was introduced to child sponsorship through Compassion International through my high school youth group. As a group, we sponsored two kids, with each of us contributing $1 a month.
In grad school, I started sponsoring a girl in Bolivia through Compassion. I learned a lot about her and poverty through our letters. She told me about her worries when her mother was very sick and prayed for God to heal her. She told me when one of her younger siblings passed away and asked for comfort for her parents. She always thanked me enthusiastically for Christmas gifts, because she could then have much-needed shoes and jackets.
Through Compassion, the girl I sponsored also grew spiritually. She shared with me how hard it was to forgive a boy who was not nice to her, but she decided to forgive him because of Jesus' example. She prayed for me and my family.
The girl I sponsor is now a teenager. Unfortunately, her parents pulled her out of Compassion's program this month. I don't know the reason why, but I can speculate that they need an additional hand to earn income for the family. I hope she continues in her spiritual growth outside of Compassion's program.
Compassion gave me another girl to sponsor, also in Bolivia. I am looking forward to getting to know her.

It's cool that you had a long-term relationship with your first sponsor child! Interestingly, our sponsor child is also from Bolivia. We just got her first response letter last week.
I didn't know that you started in high school! I thought it was my good influence in grad school.
My first child, Alex, graduated from the program when he hit 18. We sent each other farewell letters.
Our second child is Diego, and both come from Brazil.
