Unity
It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes a small group work. I've been part of small groups that gathered strength around great Bible studies. I've also been part of small groups that lasted because of the friendships that developed. In our current small group, we seem to get closer together when we have a service goal.
In our first year together, the small group banded together when one of the members gave birth to a baby with health complications. We banded together in prayer and offered help in packing, moving, and painting when they moved. Two months ago, it felt like the small group got a second wind when we supported members who went to Haiti as part of a medical missions trip. We prayed together. I got offers for dinner while A was gone. =) We got to see what God was doing in Haiti through the experiences of those who were sent. For the week before and several weeks after the Haiti trip, we were closer as a small group because we had a common goal we believed in and were excited about.
